Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups oats (ground into flour)
  • 1 cup cranberries
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup oats (kept whole)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup sweet potatoes (cooked & mashed)
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare Oat Flour: Add 3 cups of oats to the bowl of a food processor and pulse until they resemble coarse flour or breadcrumbs. Pour this oat flour into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Process Cranberries: Place cranberries in the food processor and chop until they reach a relish-like texture. For dried cranberries, add about a teaspoon of water to help the chopping process.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: Add mashed sweet potatoes, eggs, and coconut oil to the food processor with cranberries and mix until well combined into a smooth mixture.
  4. Mix Dry and Wet Ingredients: Pour the processed wet mixture into the bowl with oat flour. Add kosher salt, turmeric, and cinnamon then mix until combined thoroughly.
  5. Add Whole Oats: Add the remaining 1 cup of whole oats and pulse the food processor just a few times to incorporate without breaking up the oats. The dough should be thick and sticky.
  6. Chill Dough: Transfer the dough to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least one hour to firm up.
  7. Preheat Oven and Prepare Surface: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Flour a clean surface using a bit of your preferred flour (all-purpose, whole wheat, or gluten-free).
  8. Roll and Cut Dough: Roll out the chilled dough to about ¼ to ½ inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut into shapes or slice into squares like a checkerboard.
  9. Arrange for Baking: Place the cut treats onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a non-stick baking mat. Ensure they are not touching to prevent sticking.
  10. Bake Treats: Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes until the treats are hard and crunchy. Watch closely after 35 minutes to avoid over-browning, especially on lower racks.
  11. Cool and Store: Let the treats cool completely on a wire rack before serving or storing in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Use dried cranberries with a splash of water to help processing, or fresh cranberries directly.
  • Choose gluten-free flour for rolling if your dog has gluten sensitivities.
  • Keep an eye on baking times to avoid burning edges; ovens vary.
  • Store treats in an airtight container to maintain freshness and crunch.
  • This recipe makes about 48 small-sized treats, perfect for training or daily snacks.
