Ingredients

Garlic and Butter

  • 6 large cloves garlic (divided)
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter (or olive oil/vegan butter)

Rice and Broth

  • 2 cups long-grain white rice (rinsed well with cold water)
  • 2½ cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 tsp salt

Garnish (Optional)

  • Chopped fresh parsley or chives

Instructions

  1. Prep the garlic: Slice 4 cloves thinly and grate the remaining 2 cloves into a paste for a mix of texture and flavor.
  2. Fry the garlic slices: Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add sliced garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the garlic chips to a paper-towel lined plate to drain.
  3. Toast the rice and grated garlic: In the same pot used for frying, add the rinsed rice and cook while stirring until the rice is lightly toasted and coated with butter. Stir in the grated garlic paste and cook an additional 20-30 seconds while stirring to release its aroma.
  4. Simmer with broth: Pour in the chicken broth and salt. Bring to a simmer, cover with a tight-fitting lid, and cook on low heat for 12-15 minutes until the liquid is fully absorbed and the rice is tender.
  5. Rest the rice: Remove the pot from heat. Place a clean kitchen towel over the pot, then replace the lid to trap steam. Let the rice rest undisturbed for 10 minutes.
  6. Fluff and serve: Fluff the rice gently with a fork. Serve garnished with the reserved crispy garlic chips and chopped fresh parsley or chives for added freshness.

Notes

  • Rinsing rice removes excess starch and prevents clumping, resulting in fluffier grains.
  • Use unsalted butter or olive oil depending on dietary preference; vegan butter works well for a dairy-free option.
  • Be careful not to burn the garlic slices as they cook quickly and can turn bitter.
  • Covering the pot with a towel during the resting stage helps absorb excess moisture and keeps the rice fluffy.
  • Low-sodium chicken broth can be substituted with vegetable broth for a vegetarian version.
