Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 1/8 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm water (divided into 1/2 cup and 1/4 cup portions)
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups bread flour (or all-purpose flour)

Topping Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons salted butter (melted)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/3 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 1/4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine 1/2 cup of warm water with granulated sugar and active dry yeast. Stir and let it rest for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Make Dough: Add the remaining 1/4 cup warm water, olive oil, salt, and white vinegar to the yeast mixture. Begin mixing on medium-low speed and gradually add 1 1/2 to 2 cups of flour. Knead for a few minutes until the dough is smooth, elastic, and slightly sticky but not sticking to your finger.
  3. Proof Dough: Cover the bowl with a dry towel and allow the dough to rest in a warm place for 1 hour until it doubles in size.
  4. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 475°F (246°C) and place a pizza stone or an upside-down cookie sheet inside to heat.
  5. Shape Dough: Gently punch down the risen dough. Place a large piece of parchment paper on the counter and spread the dough by hand or with a rolling pin into a rectangular shape about 1/3 inch thick.
  6. Prepare Topping: In a small bowl, mix melted butter and minced garlic. Spread evenly over the surface of the dough, ensuring coverage to the edges. Sprinkle parmesan cheese followed by shredded mozzarella evenly over the top.
  7. Bake Breadsticks: Transfer the dough with parchment paper onto the hot pizza stone in the oven. Bake for 8-12 minutes or until the breadsticks are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and melted.
  8. Serve: Remove from oven and serve warm with dipping sauces such as marinara or ranch.

Notes

  • Use bread flour for a chewier texture; all-purpose flour works in a pinch.
  • If you don’t have a pizza stone, use an upside-down cookie sheet preheated in the oven.
  • Make sure the water is warm but not too hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • The dough should be slightly sticky to the touch but not overly sticky; adjust flour amount as needed.
  • For extra garlic flavor, add garlic powder to the dough or sprinkle additional minced garlic on top before baking.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free spot to ensure proper proofing.
  • Serve immediately for best texture and flavor, but leftovers can be reheated in the oven to regain crispness.
