Ingredients

Tomatoes

  • 24 to 30 cherry tomatoes (not grape)

Filling

  • 8 ounces cream cheese (softened)
  • 1 cucumber (finely diced)
  • 1 tablespoon dry ranch seasoning mix
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Garnish

  • 2 bunches green onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tomatoes: Using a sharp knife, cut a cross shape into the top of each cherry tomato, slicing about three quarters of the way down, being careful not to cut all the way through to avoid splitting the tomato. This forms the petals of the tulip.
  2. Hollow the Tomatoes: Use a melon baller or small spoon to carefully scoop out the tomato insides and discard. Turn the tomatoes cut side down and use a wooden barbecue skewer to gently create a hole in the bottom of each tomato to make room for the green onion stems later.
  3. Drain Excess Moisture: Place the hollowed tomatoes cut side up on paper towels to drain while preparing the filling, helping to reduce excess moisture for a better filling hold.
  4. Make the Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, finely diced cucumber, and dry ranch seasoning mix. Season lightly with salt and pepper, then stir until well blended. The cucumber should be diced very small to keep the filling firm.
  5. Prepare the Piping Bag: Transfer the cream cheese mixture to a large piping bag or a zip-top bag and snip about a half inch off the tip for easy filling. It is important the cream cheese is fully softened for smooth piping.
  6. Fill the Tomatoes: Gently pat each tomato dry with a paper towel to remove any moisture. Pipe the filling into the center of each tomato carefully, filling just until the petals naturally open without forcing them.
  7. Add the Green Onion Stems: Insert a green onion into the hole on the bottom of each tomato to form the stem. If the green onion is thick, slice the end lengthwise and slightly overlap it before insertion to ensure a secure fit and full appearance.
  8. Clean and Arrange: Wipe away any excess filling from the tomatoes with a damp paper towel for a polished look. Place the finished tulip tomatoes on a serving platter and optionally use a green onion to gently tie around the stems to create a bouquet effect.
  9. Serve: Serve immediately for best freshness. These appetizers are best enjoyed fresh as the cucumber may release moisture if stored, affecting appearance and texture.

Notes

  • Choose firm cherry tomatoes that are not too ripe to prevent splitting during hollowing.
  • Make sure to fully soften the cream cheese for easier mixing and piping.
  • Use a fine dice for cucumber to keep the filling texture smooth and stable.
  • Serving immediately is recommended to maintain appearance and texture.
  • You can substitute green onions with chives for a more delicate stem appearance.
  • These appetizers are perfect for gatherings and can be prepared shortly before serving.
