Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 1-1/4 cups milk (whole or 2% for best results)
  • 1-2 tablespoons pumpkin puree (depending on how rich you like it)
  • 1-2 tablespoons light brown sugar (depending on how sweet you like it)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
  • Pinch ground cloves
  • Pinch kosher or sea salt

Chocolate Options

  • 3 ounces semisweet chocolate (finely chopped or about 1/2 cup chips) – omit brown sugar if using this
  • OR 2 ounces white chocolate (finely chopped or about 1/3 cup chips) instead of semisweet chocolate

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a small pot, whisk together the milk, pumpkin puree, light brown sugar (if using semisweet chocolate, omit the sugar), vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and salt until fully blended.
  2. Heat Mixture: Place the pot over a medium-low flame and heat the mixture, stirring frequently until small bubbles start to form around the sides of the pan, ensuring the mixture is hot but not boiling.
  3. Add Chocolate: Reduce the heat to low. Add the finely chopped semisweet or white chocolate to the pot and stir or whisk continuously until the chocolate is fully melted, the mixture is glossy, and it thickens slightly, taking about 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Serve: Pour the hot chocolate into a mug. Optionally, top with lightly-sweetened whipped cream and a dusting of ground cinnamon. Serve immediately for best flavor and warmth.

Notes

  • For a variation, top with Brown Sugar Whipped Cream: Whip heavy cream with a little brown sugar and cinnamon for a delicious garnish.
  • Add a bourbon spike to the hot chocolate for an adult version by stirring in 1 ounce of bourbon after removing from heat.
  • If using semisweet chocolate, omit the brown sugar to avoid excessive sweetness.
  • Adjust the pumpkin and sugar amounts according to your taste preference for richness and sweetness.
