Ingredients

Shrimp and Vegetables

  • 3/4 pounds shrimp (raw, tail on)
  • 1 pound broccoli (cut into florets)
  • 4 green onions (diced, white and green parts separated)
  • Sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Orange Sesame Sauce

  • 1 cup fresh orange juice (about 2 oranges)
  • Zest of one orange
  • 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1-2 teaspoons chili garlic sauce (to taste)
  • 3-4 garlic cloves (pressed or finely minced)
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger root
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Make the Orange Sesame Sauce: In a small saucepan, whisk together orange juice, orange zest, soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, sesame oil, chili garlic sauce, garlic, ginger, and cornstarch until smooth. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes until the sauce is reduced by half and slightly thickened.
  2. Sear the Shrimp: Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add shrimp and quickly sear for approximately 2 minutes per side, or until shrimp turn pink and are cooked through. Remove shrimp from the pan and set aside.
  3. Steam the Broccoli: In the same pan, add broccoli florets and just enough water to barely cover the bottom of the pan (a few tablespoons). Cover the pan and steam the broccoli for 3-4 minutes until it becomes crisp-tender and bright green.
  4. Combine and Finish: Return the cooked shrimp and white parts of the green onions to the pan with the broccoli. Pour in the prepared orange sesame sauce and toss everything together over the heat for 1-2 minutes to meld the flavors. Remove from heat and serve immediately, garnished with the green onion tops and sesame seeds, if desired.

Notes

  • For more heat, increase the chili garlic sauce according to taste.
  • If preferred, substitute shrimp with chicken or tofu for a different protein option.
  • Use low sodium soy sauce to control salt levels better.
  • Ensure the broccoli is steamed just until crisp-tender to retain its bright color and nutrients.
  • Can be served over steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.
