Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 ½ cups warm tap water (NOT boiling or super hot, up to 130°F / 55°C)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons dry yeast
  • 4 ½ cups bread flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)

Topping

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (melted, for brushing)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic granules

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, granulated sugar, and dry yeast. Stir gently and set aside for about 10 minutes until the yeast activates and bubbles appear on the surface.
  2. Prepare Dough: In a large bowl, mix bread flour with melted butter, salt, and the activated yeast mixture. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 7 minutes until forming a smooth ball of dough.
  3. Shape Dough: Divide the dough into 12 equal portions. Roll each piece into a rope shape about the size of typical breadsticks.
  4. Let Dough Rise: Arrange the dough ropes on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover loosely with a clean towel and let them rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat Oven: About 10 minutes before the rise is complete, preheat the oven to 390°F (200°C).
  6. Bake Breadsticks: Place the risen breadsticks in the oven and bake for 15 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Finish and Serve: Remove from oven and while still warm, brush generously with melted butter. In a small bowl, mix garlic granules with salt and sprinkle over the breadsticks. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use warm water, not hot, to properly activate yeast without killing it.
  • If fresh yeast is preferred, use approximately three times the amount of dry yeast by weight.
  • Allowing the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free spot is critical for soft texture.
  • For extra garlic flavor, garlic salt can be adjusted or replaced with freshly minced garlic mixed into melted butter.
