Ingredients

1 all-beef hot dog

1 hot dog bun

1 packet ketchup

1 packet yellow mustard

2 tablespoons shredded Cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Pack the bun, shredded cheese, and condiment packets separately in your child’s lunchbox.
  2. Fill a wide-mouth thermos with boiling water and let it sit for 15–20 minutes to preheat.
  3. In the meantime, bring a separate pot of water to a boil and cook the hot dog for 4–5 minutes until heated through.
  4. Dump out the water from the thermos and replace it with fresh boiling water. Add the cooked hot dog and seal tightly.
  5. At lunchtime, remove the hot dog from the thermos, place it in the bun, and add cheese, ketchup, and mustard.

Notes

  • Preheat the thermos properly for best heat retention.
  • Pack toppings separately to prevent sogginess.
  • Use wide-mouth thermoses that can fit one or two hot dogs.
  • Use a small paper towel in the bun container to absorb condensation.
  • Cooked hot dogs can be made ahead and reheated in boiling water before packing.
