Ingredients

Filling

  • 1 pound Italian Sausage (casings removed)
  • 1 medium onion, diced

Dough & Cheese

  • 1 pound pizza dough (enough for one large pizza)
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside for the bread roll.
  2. Cook Sausage and Onions: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the Italian sausage and diced onions, breaking up the sausage with a spoon. Cook until the sausage is browned and onions are translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess oil and let the mixture cool slightly.
  3. Roll Out Dough: Place the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface. Using a floured rolling pin, roll the dough into a 12 x 16-inch rectangle to create an even base for the filling.
  4. Assemble Sausage Bread: Spread the cooled sausage and onion mixture over the dough, leaving approximately a 1-inch border around the edges. Sprinkle mozzarella and parmesan cheeses evenly over the filling.
  5. Roll Dough into Pinwheel: Brush the edges of the dough with the beaten egg, then carefully roll the dough starting from the longer side to form a pinwheel shape. Transfer the rolled dough onto the prepared baking sheet, seam side down.
  6. Prepare for Baking: Brush the top of the bread roll with the remaining beaten egg. Sprinkle Italian seasoning over the top for added flavor and visual appeal.
  7. Bake: Bake on the center rack in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown all over.
  8. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire cooling rack. Let the bread cool for 10 minutes to set. Slice into rounds and serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping if desired.

Notes

  • Make sure to drain excess oil after cooking the sausage to prevent the bread from becoming greasy.
  • The beaten egg wash helps achieve a beautiful golden crust and acts as glue to seal the edges.
  • For a spicier version, use spicy Italian sausage or add red pepper flakes.
  • Leftover bread can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven.
  • Gluten-free pizza dough can be substituted to accommodate dietary needs.
