Ingredients

Rice and Broth

  • 1 cup long grain white rice (rinsed, see note)
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Flavorings and Add-ins

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ¼- cup fresh squeezed lemon juice (to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh herbs (optional, dill is recommended)

Instructions

  1. Melt Butter: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt the unsalted butter until it’s fully melted and hot.
  2. Toast Rice and Add Turmeric: Add the rinsed rice to the skillet and stir it around for 1 minute to lightly toast it. Then stir in the turmeric evenly to coat the rice, allowing it to impart its golden color and subtle flavor.
  3. Add Liquids and Salt: Pour in the chicken broth, fresh lemon juice, and sprinkle in the salt. Stir everything together and bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Simmer and Cook Rice: Once boiling, reduce the heat to a high simmer. Cover the skillet with a lid and let it cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring once or twice during cooking to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
  5. Fluff and Add Herbs: After the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed, fluff the rice gently with a fork. Stir in the finely chopped fresh herbs if using, then serve warm.

Notes

  • Rinsing the rice removes excess starch and helps prevent it from becoming sticky or clumpy.
  • Adjust the lemon juice to your taste, adding more for extra brightness or less for a more subtle tang.
  • Dill is the recommended fresh herb, but parsley or mint can also be used for different flavor profiles.
  • If you want a vegetarian version, substitute chicken broth with vegetable broth.
