Ingredients

Espresso

  • ¼ cup espresso or moka pot coffee (2 ristretto shots)

Milk

  • ⅓ cup whole milk

Optional

  • Sugar, to taste

Instructions

  1. Brew the espresso: Prepare two ristretto shots of espresso using an espresso machine, or brew a comparable amount of strong coffee using a moka pot. Pour into a glass mug and stir in sugar if desired.
  2. Froth the milk: Steam and froth the whole milk with a steam wand until it doubles in volume. Alternatively, heat milk to 140°F and froth with a milk frother by moving it slowly in circles near the bottom of the container, then partially raising it as the milk thickens. Shaking vigorously in a hot mason jar is also an option but be cautious.
  3. Pour the milk: Allow the foamed milk to settle briefly, then pour the steamed milk into the espresso using an up-and-down motion. Slow the pour as foam appears, finishing with a small dot of milk foam in the center. Optionally, create latte art.
  4. Serve immediately: Enjoy your flat white right away to experience the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Using ristretto shots creates a more concentrated and sweeter espresso taste, key for an authentic flat white.
  • Whole milk provides the best creamy texture; however, you can experiment with milk alternatives but expect different frothing results.
  • Temperature control of the milk (around 140°F) is important to avoid scalding and to achieve the right froth consistency.
  • Practice pouring technique to perfect latte art if desired.
