Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 3 medium organic oranges
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oranges: Scrub the surface of the oranges thoroughly using a vegetable brush to remove any dirt or residues, then rinse well under cold water. Dry the oranges completely by wiping them with paper towels to ensure no moisture remains on the surface.
  2. Slice the Oranges: Using a mandolin slicer or a sharp knife, slice the oranges crosswise into uniform 1/4-inch thick slices. Discard the end slices as they tend to be too small and uneven for dehydration.
  3. Dehydrate the Orange Slices: Arrange the orange slices evenly on the trays of the food dehydrator, making sure they do not overlap. Stack all trays securely inside the dehydrator and turn it on to begin the dehydration process.
  4. Dry Until Firm: Allow the orange slices to dehydrate for six to eight hours, depending on the quantity and thickness of the slices. To achieve uniform drying, periodically switch the position of the trays during this time. The slices are ready when the peel feels hard and the fruit center is completely dry.
  5. Melt the Chocolate: Place the dark chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat them in the microwave on low to medium power for about one minute, stirring every 15 to 20 seconds until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.
  6. Coat the Orange Slices: Dip each orange slice on the rind side into the melted dark chocolate, ensuring an even coating. Then, roll or lay each dipped slice on a parchment-lined tray for the chocolate to set and harden at room temperature.
  7. Store: Once the chocolate has hardened, store the Dark Chocolate Orange Slices in an airtight container. They will retain optimum quality for up to two weeks. After that period, the chocolate may lose some of its shine but will remain just as flavorful.

Notes

  • Use organic oranges to minimize exposure to pesticides since the peel is consumed after dehydration.
  • Ensure orange slices are completely dry before dipping in chocolate to prevent melting or clumping.
  • For more intense chocolate flavor, consider using dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa content.
  • If you don’t have a dehydrator, you can dry orange slices in an oven set to the lowest temperature, but monitor carefully to avoid burning.
  • Store finished slices in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain chocolate quality.
