Ingredients

For Roasted Garlic:

810 garlic cloves

2 tablespoons olive oil

Pinch of salt

For Garlic Butter Custard:

Roasted garlic from above

½ cup butter, melted (113g)

1 egg

¼ cup milk (60g)

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon paprika

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

For Assembly:

12 King’s Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sheet Rolls (or French baguette)

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Chopped parsley and chili flakes for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Mix the peeled garlic cloves with olive oil and a pinch of salt. Transfer to a mini oven-safe pot with a lid or cover with foil and roast for about 20 minutes until soft and golden. Mash the garlic with a fork and set it aside.
  2. In a bowl, combine the mashed roasted garlic, melted butter, egg, milk, salt, paprika, and chopped parsley. Whisk thoroughly to combine into a smooth mixture.
  3. Lower the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Slice the Hawaiian rolls (or baguette) in half and place them on a large baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the bread is lightly golden and crispy.
  4. Dip the toasted bread into the garlic butter custard, ensuring it’s well coated on all sides. Place the bread back onto the baking sheet and bake for another 15-18 minutes until golden and crispy.
  5. Cover the bread with shredded mozzarella cheese and broil for 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden.
  6. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley and chili flakes. Slice and serve!

Notes

  • Herb Variations: Add herbs like thyme, rosemary, or oregano to the garlic butter custard for extra flavor.
  • Cheese Options: Swap mozzarella for cheddar, parmesan, or gouda for different cheesy flavors.
  • Spicy Kick: Add more chili flakes or hot sauce to the custard to spice it up.
  • Storage: Store leftover garlic bread in an airtight container for up to 2 days at room temperature.
  • Reheating: Reheat in the oven at 350°F for 5-10 minutes until the cheese is melted again.
  • Freezing: Assemble the bread, wrap it tightly, and freeze. Bake directly from frozen with a few extra minutes of cook time.
  • Can I use garlic powder instead of roasted garlic? Yes, about 1 teaspoon of garlic powder will work, but roasting garlic offers a richer flavor.
