Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter plus 1 tablespoon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Boil Water and Butter: In a pan, combine water, 1/3 cup unsalted butter, salt, and 2 tablespoons sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat.
  2. Add Flour: Reduce the heat to low and gradually add the flour, stirring continuously until the dough comes together and forms a ball. Remove the pan from heat.
  3. Cool Dough: Transfer the dough to a large mixing bowl and let it cool for 4-5 minutes to avoid cooking the egg in the next step.
  4. Mix Egg and Vanilla: Add the large egg and vanilla extract to the cooled dough. Use an electric hand mixer to blend everything into a smooth batter.
  5. Prepare Air Fryer and Piping Bag: Fill a piping bag with the dough mixture. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and lightly spray the air fryer basket with a neutral nonstick cooking spray such as coconut oil spray.
  6. Pipe Churro Bites: Pipe bite-sized churros directly into the air fryer basket, avoiding overcrowding. If preferred, spoon small dollops of dough instead of piping.
  7. Cook Churros: Brush the tops of the churro bites with the remaining tablespoon of melted butter. Air fry for 12-15 minutes until the churros become golden brown and crispy. Repeat the process with remaining dough.
  8. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: In a shallow bowl, mix granulated sugar with ground cinnamon evenly.
  9. Coat Churro Bites: Once cooked, toss the churro bites in the cinnamon sugar mixture until well coated. If the sugar mixture doesn’t stick well, brush the bites lightly with melted butter or spray with water/nonstick spray before coating again.
  10. Serve: Serve the churro bites warm with chocolate syrup, honey, or Nutella for dipping.

Notes

  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking and crispiness.
  • The air fryer temperature is set to 375°F for perfectly cooked churros; adjust time slightly if your air fryer runs hotter or cooler.
  • If cinnamon sugar doesn’t stick well, using melted butter or a light spray of water/nonstick cooking spray helps the coating adhere better.
  • These churro bites are best enjoyed fresh and warm.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute butter with a suitable vegan butter alternative and use a dairy-free nonstick spray.
