Ingredients

For the Apple Fries

  • 2 large Honeycrisp apples
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 Tablespoons apple pie spice
  • 5 Tablespoons cinnamon (reserve 1 Tablespoon for top coating)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Topping

  • ¼ cup light brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon cinnamon (reserved from above)
  • Olive oil nonstick spray

Optional for Serving

  • Caramel sauce or powdered sugar glaze

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Use an apple peeler to peel the skins off each apple. Cut each apple in half, then slice into ½ inch wedges for fry-like shapes.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, apple pie spice, and 4 tablespoons of cinnamon until well combined.
  3. Coat Apple Wedges First Time: Transfer the flour mixture into a large bowl or container with a lid, then add the apple wedges. Place the lid on and shake vigorously to ensure all apple wedges are evenly coated.
  4. Remove Excess Coating: Use a large slotted spoon to lift the coated apple wedges from the container, shaking off any excess flour mixture. Place the coated wedges on a plate.
  5. Prepare Egg Wash: In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and vanilla extract until smooth.
  6. Dredge Apples in Egg Wash: Dip a few apple wedges at a time into the egg mixture, ensuring each wedge is fully coated.
  7. Coat Apple Wedges Second Time: Return the egg-coated apple wedges to the remaining flour mixture in the container. Replace the lid and shake again to form a second layer of coating.
  8. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar Topping: In a small bowl, mix together the light brown sugar and the reserved 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. Set aside.
  9. Preheat and Prepare Air Fryer: Spray the air fryer basket with olive oil nonstick spray to prevent sticking. Arrange coated apple wedges in a single layer inside the basket. Note: you may need to cook in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  10. Air Fry First Side: Spray the top of the apple wedges liberally with olive oil spray and sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture over them. Air fry at 350°F for 6 minutes.
  11. Flip and Air Fry Second Side: Open the basket, flip the apple fries carefully, spray again with nonstick spray, and sprinkle remaining cinnamon sugar mixture on top. Air fry for an additional 6 minutes.
  12. Serve: Transfer the cooked apple fries to a serving plate. Serve warm with caramel sauce or a simple powdered sugar glaze, if desired.

Notes

  • Honeycrisp apples are recommended for their firm texture and natural sweetness which holds up well in air frying.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking and crispiness.
  • For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg or ground ginger to the flour mixture.
  • These apple fries are best served immediately for optimal crispness.
  • To make a powdered sugar glaze, mix powdered sugar with a few drops of milk until smooth.
  • Adjust cooking times slightly depending on your air fryer model and apple slice thickness.
